Course Title: Computer Architecture
ABOUT THE SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMMES
The short learning programme in Computer Architecture is the starting point for a non-technical person wishing to enter the IT arena. The programme covers the basics of hardware and software from understanding the BIOS, to learning about installing various peripherals. Operating systems discussed include DOS 6.22, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional. Students will be able to identify hardware components and set up an operating system so that the hardware becomes functional.
The programme enables students to master the upgrading of computers by troubleshooting for faults, repairing and rebuilding.
PROGRAMME OUTLINE:
Hardware
· - Basic computer service concept
· - The fundamentals of PC and PC memory architecture
· - Understanding the disk system architecture and PC bus architecture
· - Understanding and using peripheral devices and printers
· - Understanding network fundamentals
· - Being able to install and upgrade hardware
· - General troubleshooting techniques
Software
· - Introduction to computer operating systems
· - Using the Microsoft® Operating System GUI (Graphic User Interface)
· - Using and configuring additional peripherals like scanners and multimedia devices
· - Performing preventative maintenance
· - Configuring network software so that people can work and share information across a network
· - Troubleshooting Windows and other applications
CERTIFICATION
The Computer Architecture Certificate is a short learning progarmme (SLP) that is certified by The Independent Institute.
Students enrolled in this short learning programme can apply, on successful completion, to be awarded credit for the equivalent full qualification module when registering for a full qualification with The Independent Institute of Education..

PROGRAMME MATERIAL:
The programme fee includes all programme material which becomes the property of the student. This material constitutes a valuable source of on-going reference.
PROGRAMME EVALUATION:
The programme assessment includes a group assignment, test and formal written examination at the end of the programme. Should a student fail to achieve the required mark, he/she may repeat the programme at no additional charge within 18 months of first registration (subject to certain conditions).
