Course Title: Architectural Draughting
How is the course structured?
In less than a year - part-time or 'full-time' or contact- you can earn your Architectural Draughting certificate. You will be able to draw up plans:
* for commercial and domestic buildings
* up to 500m2 and up to two stories high
for approval by council and for construction by building contractors.
As oLearn is a private college, it is flexible, result-oriented and market driven.
The course modules are written in on-going consultation with industry to ensure their continuing relevance.
On successful completion of the course, you are employable because the course is written to meet industry needs.
This course consists of a series of modules assembled to form a useful qualification but which may also be taken individually.
Continuous assessment of student progress ensures that, on completion of their studies, they may be expected to be fully competent to play a productive and profitable part in industry.
Is the course recognised?
oLearn's Architectural Draughting course has Training Programme Approval, through Inscape Design College, by South African Institute of Draughting (SAID) and our students are encouraged to register as members.
The law requires all people who produce architectural documentation to register with South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP).
oLearn, sister college, Inscape, is the first and only private college to have its Architectural Draughting course validated by . If you enrol at oLearn, you only have to do three years of internship before applying for registration.
As an Inscape/oLearn student you can also apply to for a study grant.
(Students at institutions that are not validated by must also have undergone two years of practical training under the direct supervision of a professionally registered person, by the end of their course. Thereafter, they still have to do three years of internship. Then only can they apply to , who at their discretion, will allow them to be registered as Candidate Architectural Draughtspersons.), who at their discretion, will allow them to be registered as Candidate Architectural Draughtspersons.) must also have undergone two years of practical training under the direct supervision of a professionally registered person, by the end of their course.

Is there legislation governing this sector?
* The Architectural Profession Act 44 of 2000 provides for the registration of Professional Architects, Senior Architectural Technologists, Architectural Technologist and Architectural Draughtsperson.
* People wanting to produce and submit drawings to local councils for approval must be registered by SACAP.
* To facilitate this registration, it is recommended that students of the oLearn Architectural Draughting course apply to the SAID for membership.

The course consists of the following modules:

* Module 10: Portfolio
Produce and present a professional portfolio • Solve problems • Work independently • Demonstrate industry-readiness
* Module 11: Experiential Training
o Work in the architectural field under the supervision of a SACAP registered practitioner for 240 hours within 12 months from the start of the course, and
o Submit a log signed by the supervisor confirming that the above work has been done, and
o Submit a portfolio of evidence of the work undertaken during the Experiential Training.
Is it a practical course?
Our courses are outcomes-based and the focus is on the student integrating the theory explained in the classroom by the lecturers and applying this practically in projects, which are then assessed by the lecturer.
There are no exams: to pass the course, students must complete and submit a series of projects and a portfolio of work, and pass each module.
