Course Title: Clothing Design & Construction
How is the course structured?
The Clothing Design & Construction Course is a one year part-time course consisting of a series of modules which are assembled to form a useful qualification.
As olearn is a private college, it is flexible, result-oriented and market driven.
The course modules are written in on-going consultation with industry to ensure their continuing relevance.
Continuous assessment of student progress ensures that, on completion of their studies, they may be expected to be fully competent to play a productive and profitable part in industry.
What is covered in the course?
In less than a year - part-time - you can earn your Clothing Design and Construction certificate.
You will be able to design and make garments
* for your own clients,
* for sale through fashion boutiques and clothing stores.
This course consists of a series of modules assembled to form a useful qualification but which may also be taken individually.
The course consists of the following modules:
Module 01: Introduction to Clothing Design
Introduction to Clothing Design from Concept to Final Product • Characteristics of a Well-rounded Clothing Designer • Basic Design Theory • Design Elements • The Design Room • The Pattern Room • The Cutting Room • The Sewing Room • Equipment • Health and Safety • Clothing / Fashion Industry Terminology
Module 02: Standard Drawing Conventions
Basic Fashion Drawing • The 8-head Figure (Female and Male) • The 9-head Figure (Female and Male) • Illustration and Mark Making Techniques • 3D Rendering • Introduction to Technical Drawing for Clothing Design • 2D Rendering • Introduction to Media Application (Pencil, Ink, Watercolours, Gouache, Copic Markers, Mixing Multiple Media) • Design Presentation (Worksheets and Final Layouts) *

Module 07: Process of Clothing Design
Theory of Process Followed • From Concept to Final Product • Design Development: Interpreting the Brief, Research, Compilation and Presentation of Research Findings (Moodboard), Design Development (Worksheets), Design Finalisation (Final Layouts) • Pattern Development: Selecting the Correct Basic Blocks, Pattern Manipulation (Working Pattern), Sample Making, Pattern Completion (Final Pattern), Layout of Pattern on Fabric, Fabric Cutting • Garment Construction: Preparation, Construction, Finishing Techniques, Quality Assurance

Module 10: Portfolio
Produce and present a professional portfolio • Solve problems • Work independently • Demonstrate industry-readiness
Module 11: Experiential Training
o Work in the apparel business under the supervision of a fashion, textile or garment designer for 240 hours within 12 months from the start of the course, and
o Submit a log signed by the supervisor confirming that the above work has been done, and
o Submit a portfolio of evidence of the work undertaken during the Experiential Training
Is the course recognised?
The Clothing Design and Construction course offered by olearn is a new course and is not yet accredited.
Is it a practical course?
Our courses are outcomes-based and the focus is on the student integrating the theory explained in the classroom by the lecturers and applying this practically in projects, which are then assessed by the lecturer.
There are no exams: to pass the course, students must complete and submit a series of projects and a portfolio of work, and pass each module.
