Duration 2 year Diploma with optional 3rd year Advanced Diploma. Admission requirement A Grade 12 (Matric) Certificate or equivalent and a successful written evaluation with your application accompanied by a portfolio of artwork. Art as a subject is advantageous but not compulsory.

The two-year Diploma in Animation covers all aspects of the art of animation and equips students to become professional animators for the Film, Television and Multimedia industries. Animators are scarce in South Africa in proportion to the amount of work that exists there are many exciting career opportunities in this growing industry.

In the first year students learn basic animation principles and the fundamentals of 2D animation by creating characters and backgrounds. It is important not to just learn the software, but actually animate objects through movement and visual storytelling skills. They are also introduced to using digital techniques to create and colour their animations. The final project consists of a fully animated, digitally finished short animated narrative.

In the second year students refine their technical skills in Computer Graphics and Digital Production to a professional level and build on their traditional animation skills. Each term introduces a new medium which will challenge their storytelling capabilities.

Graduates have careers in Motion picture, television and multimedia industries doing traditional 2D animation, storyboarding, illustration, cut-out animation, computer-based 2D animation, computer animation for TV series, motion picture special effects, high-end compositing and effects and production of animation for TV, Film, the Internet and mobile phones.
