Course Title: Auditioning for a Talent Search- Cape Town
Background
This course is aimed at young, dynamic and individual personalities wanting to enter the highly competitive world of the entertainment industry through a talent search such as SA’s GOT TALENT or POP IDOLS. In this course you will learn the skills needed for auditioning in this stressful environment and develop them during the course. The skills include relating to your audience to the choosing the correct song/presentation piece and styling yourself so that you physically present yourself in the best possible way. At the end of the course you will be assessed and a video tape will enable you to see yourself as your lecturers saw you.
Lecturers
CHRISTINE WEIR: Has had a very varied career – she has worked as a musical theatre performer, as a lounge singer and as an actress both on stage and on TV.She studied Drama at the Pretoria Tecnikon and for 8 years she took private singing lessons with Sarie Lamprecht. She and her brother Graham were the founder members of Not the Midnight Mass which last year celebrated its 21st birthday by doing a season at Peter Toeriens Theatre on the Bay, and for which all the performers were awarded the Fleur de Cap Award for Best Performer in a Musical. Between 2002 and 2005 she was the soloist in the Sun City Extravaganza “Odyssey” and during this time she also sang for the Super Bowl Lotto Car Draw and worked as a lounge singer in the Sun City Casino. In 2007 she returned to the Sun city Casino to perform another season as a lounge singer.
In 2006 she performed her solo show aboard the MS Melody which sailed from Naples to Durban and in the same year she performed with an orchestra in Songs from the Mediterranean at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, conducted by Graham Scott. She received a Naledi Best Performer Nomination for Songs from the Mediterranean. In 2008 she was a regional judge for HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL and toured the country auditioning talented teenagers in a bid to find the leads roles in the show. She has been the solo singer for the road shows for large corporate companies; in 2008 she was the singer for the VW Road Show, in 2005 she went on tour with the WesBank 3 Billion Road Show, and in 2004 as part of Not the Midnight Mass she performed the theme song for the Momentum Life road show. In 2010 she was nominated for a Fleur de Cap Award Best Performer in a musical for her performance in NOAH OF CAPE TOWN. She is currently appearing with Godfrey Johnson in Tainted Love at Studio 54 in Greenpoint. She writes her own songs and she’s busy working on my own album which will be released soon.
CRAIG LEO is a theatre designer, puppeteer and performing artist. After completing 6 semesters at the Department of Fine Art and Architecture, he left UCT to apprentice designer and circus guru Keith Anderson. Together they revived the then CAPAB puppet company in the 90's. During this time he began training in circus arts performing with The Zip Zap Circus. While performing in the Sun City circus extravaganza, Baletsatsi, Craig together with three colleagues, formed an acrobatic theatre company called 'Myth', which toured both Austria and Germany. As performer he has worked with the companies Magnet Theatre on the productions Pump and O'nnestbo as well the role of 'Venticelli' in Lara Foot Newton's production of Amadeus at the Baxter Theatre. His work as designer includes costume design for the Sun City ExtravaganzaAfro Dizzia and Pieter Torien's Joseph.
Over the years, Craig has developed a long standing working relationship with Magnet Theatre as stage manager as well as production designer.For Jazzart and Magnet Theatre collaborations he designed costume and set for Medea, Bolero, Rain in a Dead Man's Footprints and Cargo. Craig has also worked extensively with The Handspring Puppet Company on a local and international level touring to the UK, Europe and the USA. Productions include Tall Horse, Il Ritorno dUlisse and more recently, War Horse at The Royal National Theatre in Londonand as associate director of puppetry for War Horse at the New London theatre in the West End.. At the close of 2009 Craig completed work as production designer for Jazzarts production Partly God directed by Lara Foot, after which he traveled to Belgium to work with Franco Dragone of Cirque Du Soleil fame in Belgium on their new production for Macau, China. Craig is currently engaged as costume designer on Romeo and Juliet to be directed by Roy Sergeant as well as costume designer on Lovaffair for the Baxter Theatre and has just completed production design for the new play, London Road, directed by Lara Bye currently running at the Kalk Bay Theatre.
