Course Title: Business Writing and Report Writing Skills
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to capacitate people to write a wide variety of texts for a range of situations and purposes in the workplace. Participants will be able to define the purpose of writing, identify the format needed and write the text using appropriate style, tone, conduct necessary research, use a successful writing plan, choose appropriate language, edit and proofread for improvement. The result would be an accurate, clear, well researched and presentable text.
Outcomes
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
1. Write for a specific purpose and audience
2. Use grammatical structures and writing conventions to produce coherent and cohesive texts for specific contexts
3. Adapt language to suit context
4. Draft and edit own writing
5. Structure writing appropriate to format and context
The course will examine and refine knowledge and skills in various areas throughout the two days.
BUSINESS WRITING SKILLS - DAY ONE
1. Formats
Business letters, memo, emails, faxes, reports and other formats:
- Layout of each format
- Protocol in writing style, tone and language use when writing business letters, memos, emails, reports etc.
- The reason why different formats are used in various situations
2. Audience Analysis
Who are you writing for?
- Analysing your audience and pitching your written correspondence to target that person’s understanding.
3. Organising Writing
Organising your long or short text so that it makes the required impact
- Structure
- Paragraphs
- Sentences
- Impact
4. Technical Issues
Using accurate language so that clarity is attained and next steps are clear:
Business is busy - your important report may only have a few minute’s attention with no time for consideration or for the recipient to try and understand an unclear message. So the aim is to get to the point quickly, supporting your reasoning concisely. In general, business writing is briefer and more to the point than many other types of writing.
During this course we will discuss a number of important pointers and practices with regards to report writing. Formats, structure, organisation, research and attaining objectives will all be explored, practiced and implemented.
We will also explore tone, style, audience, writing technique and other significant factors which need to be kept in mind with business writing.
