Course Title: Criminal Justice Short Course

What is Criminal Justice?

Criminal Justice is the system of practices and institutions of governments directed at upholding social control, deterring and mitigating crime, and sanctioning those who violate laws with criminal penalties and rehabilitation efforts.

Why Should I Study Criminal Justice?

You should study Criminal Justice to find out how the Criminal Justice System works, as well as how the Criminal Procedure Act and Criminal Law affects your life.

Criminal Justice: Course Structure

In order to complete The Short Course Certificate: Criminal Justice, students will have to complete the following Modules:

    * Tactics for Winning
    * Report Writing (2 Modules)
    * Introduction to the South African Criminal Justice System (2 Modules)
    * Introduction to South African Criminal Law (2 Modules)
    * Search and Seizure according to the Criminal Procedure Act (2 Modules)

Criminal Justice: Programme Outcomes

    * Tactics for Winning

This is the first Module that all students have to complete once they have registered with College SA. This Module is designed to introduce Students to the College. In this Module, you will learn more about how Distance Learning Works and what the best ways are to study to prepare for assessments.

    * Report Writing

There are two Modules to this component. You will learn about the different types of writing skills for the different investigative purposes. You will also learn how to access, process, re-organise and synthesise information.

    * Introduction to the South African Criminal Justice System

There are two Modules to this component. You will be given an orientation of the need for a legal system, the role of law, the different sources of law, the South African Court Structure and their Jurisdiction, and key role players within the Criminal Justice System.

    * Introduction to South African Criminal Law

There are two Modules to this component. You will learn more about the four components of any given crime; the principle of legality and the elements of conduct, unlawfulness and culpability.

    * Search and Seizure according to the Criminal Procedure Act

There are two Modules to this component. You will be guided through some of the requirements for conducting Search and Seizures.

Course Duration

The Short Course Certificate: Criminal Justice will take you approximately 12 months to complete.

Entrance Requirements

    * The ability to read and write in English.

Assessment and Award

All Students are required to complete Tactics for Winning, and also, to pass all the Multiple Choice Assignments. A pass is any mark of 50% or higher.

On completion of the Short Course Certificate: Criminal Justice, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from College SA and Strategic Investigations and Seminars.
