T he SAS Yacht Hand run by the Academy is the most effective beginner-training course in the country because it uniquely teaches skippering skills from day one!  In this course, beginners learn how to handle a yacht unsupervised within the first 4 days performing such exercises as sailing on and off a dock, tacking and gibing, Man-Over-Board, sailing backwards and forwards as well as acting as a crew member - changing sails, winching in sails, etc. Teaching beginners to take control is the safest method of teaching according to the ASA, as even the most inexperienced crew member aboard will be able to cope on their own if the need ever arose.

SAS Day Skippers

The SAS Day Skipper focuses more on navigation, but does include useful modules such as 8 night hours of sailing and general boat handling, so the combined course is giving the students a good grounding in basic skippering skills as well as an introduction to navigation and night sailing. Before you write your SAS Day Skipper exam you will be required to have done 200 offshore nautical miles as well as 2 night entries / 8 night hours - which will be obtained during the course.

Meals are for your own account – the Waterfront in Cape Town has numerous restaurants to choose from otherwise students can eat at the Royal Cape Yacht Club or on the yachts (R40/day recommended)

Transport:

Transport from Cape Town to Langebaan return costs R150 or R75 one way.

Course Title 2 9 Day SAS Yacht Hand & Day Skippers Course Classification Sport -> Sailing -> SAS Course Requirements Price Course Fees: (Enquire about our winter specials) The cost of the course is R 7900 per person. A 50% deposit is required in order to secure your reservation, and the balance of the course fees is due one week prior to the start of your course. If you wish, the course can also be done in 2 separate stages: SAS Yacht Hand: R 3950 per person . SAS Day Skippers: R 4200 per person. Extra costs: (only if you want to register with SAS) R 20 - Eye test R 130 - VHF Radio License R 200 / R 300 - SAS Registration (R 200 for members / R 300 for non-members) Notes Duration The SAS Yacht Hand is 4.5 days, and the SAS Day Skippers is 4.5 days in length. Experience: It is a beginner's course therefore NO experience is required.
