Course Title:   Comprehensive Web Site Design - Cape Town

Aim and Definition

The aim of this course is to equip the student with all the major skills to develop professional websites. Students will have hands-on training from the conceptualization right through to the completion of basic Graphic and Multimedia (animation and sound) based websites. Due to the modular design of this course, any student with prior experience in any of the modules can simply join at the relevant module.

Lecturer

Steve has been teaching Web part time for over 10 years at various prestigious educational institutions such as the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business, The AAA School of Advertising, Netscope training and has become part of the furniture at CityVarsity, having taught Comprehensive Web in it's various forms for over 7 years.

During the day, he runs an internet consultancy specializing in web development, social media, Web 2.0 and internet security; having done projects for clients like Distell and a string of companies in the financial sector.

Apart from being a Macromedia (now known as Adobe) Guru - Steve also has a passion for music and video, making many of the media lectures great fun!   Now if only he can figure out how to stop his VCR from flashing 12:00 as the time.

COURSE OUTLINE

Module 1: Dreamweaver

Prerequisites: Basic PC literacy In this module students will learn how to create a basic website with a simple JavaScript application, images, & links, and learn to upload this to the Internet.

    * Taking and interpreting a customer’s brief
    * Pre-visualizing web pages, establishing a site roadmap
    * Introduction to HTML
    * Get to know Dreamweaver – its interface, palettes, and menu options. A great first step in learning to get the most out of the program
    * Setting up a Web Site
    * HTML Based Typography
    * Formatting Text
    * Defining Page Properties
    * Writing for the Web
    * Inserting Images
    * Setting Hyperlinks
    * Creating Image Maps
    * Creating Tables
    * Static Layout
    * Creating Basic Forms
    * Uploading Your Site

Module 2: Fireworks

Prerequisites: Students should have designed at least one website using an industry standard web design program such as FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or NetObjectsFusion   In this module: Students will learn how to create and manipulate images to suit a professional website. More advanced techniques in design and layout form part of this module.

    * Bitmap Editing
    * Editing Vector Images
    * Applying Text and Fills
    * Adding Special Effects
    * Effective use of colour combinations for design. Choosing the right colours
    * Scanning and Importing
    * Exporting and Optimizing
    * Creating Animated GIF Images
    * Creating Buttons
    * Using Image Maps and Slicing
    * Integration with Dreamweaver


Module 3: Macromedia Flash MX

Prerequisites: Students should have designed at least one website using an industry standard web design program such as FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or NetObjectsFusion In this module: Tired of normal websites? This module makes the web come alive with Animation and Sound.

    * Introduction to the Flash workspace
    * Drawing tools
    * Introduction to layers
    * Importing Artwork
    * Symbols, Instances, and the library
    * Animation
    * Scenes, Actions, and the Buttons
    * Sound
    * More Actions
    * Publish
    * Adding multimedia files into HTML script

Module 4: Programming for Designers

Prerequisites: Previous experience with web programs such as Frontpage or Dreamweaver In this module: This course teaches you the basics of development (programming) without having to be a programmer or to have any interest in programming. It is aimed mainly at people who have never programmed before. Designers who find static HTML limiting turn to this aspect of Dreamweaver MX to set their imaginations free.

Completing this course gives the student the ability to create websites that “end-users” can update themselves. High volume websites that change often are usually built using this or similar techniques. You will be able t
