Course Title:   Nature Guide Training

Arrive Day One - Booking in, registration and course introduction

Day Two - FGASA, THETA and Tourism Act. Discuss definition of conservation, objectives, and principles of guiding, as well as environmental ethics.
Afternoon: Familiarization of the field.

Day Three - Geology and Palaeontology.
Afternoon: Practical geology excursion.

Day Four - Botany lectures in morning.
Afternoon: Conduct practical indentification in the field.

Day Five - Astronomy, Meteorology lectures.
Afternoon: Botany practical.
Evening: Astronomy practical.

Day Six - Animal studies: Mammals and Birds. Slide interpretation and practical excursion.

Day Seven - Animal studies: Insects, Amphibians and Reptiles. Snake bite treatment, scorpion stings. Animal behaviour. Afternoon: Practical excursion.

Day Eight - Ecology lectures.
Afternoon: Practical with focus on ecological functioning of marine ecosystems.

Day Nine - Ecology lectures with focus on some Southern African biomes - savanna, Karoo, Fynbos, Desert.
Afternoon: Ecology practical.

Day Ten - Safaris, Camping and Vehicles. Demonstrate equipment such as field toilets, snatch rope, water bottles, wheel pumps etc. Relate information about field trips with practical hints. Set up a temporary camp in the veld and overnight.

Day Eleven - Survival and Field Skills lectures and practical. Traditional uses of plants and animals, direction-finding & navigation.

Day Twelve - Practical excursions and evaluations.

Day Thirteen - Practical excursions and evaluations. Career workshop.

Day Fourteen - Exam preparation.  Pack up and depart after lunch.

Course Requirements
Price The course fee is R5100 (VAT excl). This fee includes rustic accommodation and meals, as well as the prescribed handbook.

The course fees do not include the cost of a First Aid Course, FGASA or DEAT registration fees.
Notes Our Introductory Field Guide courses are offered in the Western Cape, preparing candidates for FGASA Level 1 and the THETA Unit Standard Conduct a Limited Guided Nature Experience.

Johan Fourie (FGASA Level 3 SKS Field Guide - THETA registered Skills Assessor and Advanced Trainer) is in charge of the training programme, which is based on his publication An Introduction to Nature Guiding. He has been training Field Guides in the National Parks and surrounding communities for 7 years. The training programmes are strengthened by the inputs of a variety of experts, such as Dr Izak Rust (co-author of An Introduction to Nature Guiding), Trevor Dearlove, Dr John Almond (co-author of Advanced Nature Guiding), Danie Lourens and JJ Minye (Senior Tracker).

We also run a Short Course (Level 1) for Corporate Clients (e.g. Game Lodges and Tour Operators). Please contact us for more information.

Our full-time Introductory Field Guide courses will be run from January, March, May/June and Sept/2007. The course prepares you and assesses you for the THETA National Qualification TGSP2, Site Guide (Nature) Level 2.
