Course Title: Supported Independent Study
This exciting new development in the options offered by the Academy allows for students who have previously not been able to access training to now do so.
The Supported Independent Study Course is to be offered from 2008.
Students must first attend the necessary lectures and practical modules (Lecture Blocks) before they begin the completion of course work at home.
Lectures and practical workshops will be made up of theory, presentation of materials supervised practice sessions and overview of philosophy.
At each lecture block, students will be given a Course manuals to work through as we actually do the presentations – they will have to complete manuals independently as well as observations, assignments and research.
In order to sign off a module – they must hand in a completed manual and any set home study assignments. These are handed in at the following Lecture Block.
Students must in addition to this be prepared to attend e.g. SAMA conference, SIG meetings (possibly Montessori or other – e.g. Emotional intelligence workshop) to earn credits towards their qualification.
Elective Modules offered will be informative, progressive and compliant with regulated standards. These will include such things as First Aid, HIV/Aids Education, Nutrition, Trauma and the Brain, Working with Special Needs Learners, Inclusion in Practice, Introductory Child Psychology and Development, School Management, Classroom Management, Montessori and the NCS, Leadership in Education, and several more exciting topics.
A practical teaching component will be included.
Optional internships can be arranged under a qualified and verified Montessori directress.
Assessment will be broad-based and allow students to develop real skills needed in the day-to-day experience of working in a Montessori classroom. Examples include developing record keeping methods, identifying Learners with Special Needs, Practical Tasks (plan a field trip, plan the lessons etc), Running a Parent Education Programme and similar.
