What is the typical work of a Web Designer?

Web designers use a combination of programming and design skills to build or revamp websites. A good web designer needs both creative and technical skills. They must be able to picture how a site will look (at the 'front end'), and also understand how it will work (at the 'back end').

As a web designer, you would work on a wide range of projects which could include anything from an interactive educational resource to an online shopping site. Your main duties would include:

•  meeting the client to discuss what they want their site to do and who it is aimed at
•  preparing a design plan, showing the site structure and how the different parts link together
•  deciding which text, colours and backgrounds to use
•  laying out pages, positioning buttons, links and pictures, using design software
•  adding multimedia features like sound, animation and video
•  testing and refining the design and site features until everything works as planned
•  uploading the site to a server for publication online.

Depending on the project, you may be contracted to maintain your client's website once it is up and running.

Web Marketing and e-Commerce (15 credits):
The student will obtain a good working knowledge of how important Web Advertising is.

Basic Web Creation (Expression Web) (10 credits):
Microsoft FrontPage is one of the tools used to create web sites for the www. It is used to create, manipulate and publish client web sites.

HTML (15 credits):
Students will master the art of using HTML user agents that are used to structure information denoting certain text as headings, paragraphs etc.

Image Creation and Composition (Adobe Photoshop for Web Applications) (15 credits):
Becoming a Web Designer entails more than being creative. You will learn how to manipulate images with professional results. You will create animated GIFs, slices for rollover effects, links, animations and optimize graphics for the web.

Image Creation & Optimization (Fireworks) (15 credits):
Macromedia Fireworks create the smallest, high-test-quality JPEG and GIF graphics in the least number of steps. It simplifies and streamlines the process of creating web and screen graphics, while offering the ultimate in flexibility and editing.

Interactive Creations (Flash) (15 credits):
This program offers exciting new measures for creating lush and mind-blowing effects on the web. It advances web animation with exciting effects and sound. Students will create their own Flash Player Movies.

Advanced Website Design (Dreamweaver) (15 credits):
Use Dreamweaver as a web design tool which provides simplicity, elegance and depth to build professional web sites.

Advanced e-Graphics & Illustration (Adobe Illustrator) (15 credits):
Adobe Illustrator software gives you new creative freedom that lets you realize your ideas quickly and powerfully. Instantly convert bitmaps to vector artwork and paint more intuitively. Save time with intelligent palettes and optimized workspaces. Plus, tight integration with other software allows you to produce extraordinary graphics for print, video, the web, and mobile devices.

Digital Audio Manipulation (Audacity) (5 credits):
Audacity will equip students to develop the necessary knowledge, practical skills and attitudes to perform effectively and to understand and apply key concepts to navigate within the Audacity environment and to apply basic sound editing concepts.




Access & SQL (15 credits):
Microsoft Access is a relational database management system from Microsoft, packaged to make it possible for relatively inexperienced programmers to build front ends to databases. Students will master tables, queries, forms and reports by using the database structure. SQL is the most popular computer language used to create, retrieve, update and delete data from relational database management systems. The student is going to use queries, procedures and triggers to create tables and fields.

Director (10 credits):
With Macromedia Director the students will be equipped with basic to intermediate Lingo Scripting knowledge. It allows users to build applications built on a movie, with the user as the "director" of the movie.

JavaScript & VBScript (30 credits):
Scripting language developed by Netscape/Explorer to enable web authors to design interactive sites. Scripting can interact with HTML source code, enabling web authors to add more dynamic content to their sites.

ASP/PHP (40 credits):
The students will combine the client and server side scripting with the SQL database to create professional web sites.

Advanced Flash (15 credits):
Flash can interact with popular web browser scripting environments such as JavaScript and VBScript. This opened many new possibilities for highly interactive web pages.
