 CONTENTS
 
  • Introduction of training, back-ground, rules, breaks, times etc..
  • Basic understanding, terms and definitions, measurements and systems
  • The greater (quality) picture and going in circles
  • Soldering, definitions and other joining techniques (welding, gluing)
  • Metals and properties, oxides and contamination, use of fluxes, role of flux. Temperatures and effects. Intermetallics, wetting and non-wetting
  • De-wetting phenomena, pictures and practical sample
  • Importance of good and correct definitions , the “Death of the Dry Joint”
  • Inspection, classification, light, magnification aids, microscopes etc…
  • Tools, maintenance and soldering iron basics, tinning the tip, changing the tip, high temperature grease, grounding for ESD.
  • Cutting, handling and small engineering hand-tools use in electronics, types and how to maintain in good condition.
  • Wires, stripping, tinning and soldering
  • Copper (and other) surfaces, Solderability, wetting angle (contact angle), criteria. Cleaning surfaces, but not Printed Circuits Boards.
  • Wires, cables, coax and high power. Stripping, tinning and harnessing.
  • Copper dissolution of wires and strips (also Printed Circuit Boards)
  • Lead free solder, soldering with lead-free , RoHS and WEEE
  • DVD on lead-free use as guide for good soldering practice.
  • Good thermal bridge, contamination, tool tinning and preservation techniques. Sponges, keep wet and clean.
  • Hand-soldering techniques, theory with practical workshop later. Tool selection, power, wattage, temperature, maintenance. Tip selection.
  • Fluxes and cleaning issues. Propanol as cleaning agent.

Soldering Course Practical Workshop Requirements

Soldering Station Weller/ Magnum or equivalent with solder tips 0.8mm, 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm spade and conical shapes.
Tip cleaner curls
New wet sponges with distilled water.
Small engineering hand tools as per quotation see separate file
Solder wire on reel (spool) 0.8 mm dia (or nearest) and 0.45 mm dia RMA, No-Clean or Water based flux loaded (your preference)
Flux pen Bonkote or equivalent and liquid flux (your choice)
Lint free cloths
Cleaning chemicals
Small brushes (China 479 or equivalent) for cleaning
Ear buds
Tooth picks (soft wood)
Sufficient light (1000 lux at around 6000 K white light)
Magnifier glass 1.7 x or more (illuminated)
