Course Title: Diploma: Photography & Visual Arts
This is a fulltime one year course divided into 4 quarters with an additional six month practical in the workplace.
Diploma in Photography is a full year Visual Skills Course with Photography I, II and III as compulsory subjects. This is a full time course at Visual Skills School's campus in Pretoria North. On completion of the academic year, students receive a Certificate: Photography & Visual Arts. Students can then register for the second year to obtain the Diploma.
Theoretical classes are conducted in classrooms equipped with the latest technology. Each student is allocated a computer station for the duration of the course. Lecturers are hands on and all lectures are conducted interactively and demonstrated on a wide screen. VSS provides equipment & studios for studio photography. Studios are available to students at all times. The six month practical will be in the speciality field of the student, i.e. Photography, Graphic Design or Communication.
Field trips provide unparalleled opportunities. Students are divided into groups and each group is assisted by a lecturer. On trips we download the day's work at night, discuss and criticize, and tomorrow we try to rectify our mistakes.
Assessment methods include assignments, written tests, practical darkroom (classic & digital), role play and exhibitions. Bi-monthly evaluations will take place while students are completing their six month practical for the diploma course.
An extended portfolio is the ultimate goal for each and every student in order to demonstrate their creativity and capability and we believe that an outstanding portfolio is worth more than a thousand academic qualifications in the visual world. Students must think critically and make judgment calls. They must access and manage information; design, create and perform; and improve their communication skills. Lecturers demonstrate techniques and procedures before students have to manage on their own. Visual Skills School has an open-door policy and all students are welcome to discuss any problems they might experience. Students are also invited to give critical feedback in order for the school's management and academic staff to make informed decisions.
