The Songwriters Toolkit

This course is for songwriters who want to express themselves creatively through words and music, and at the same time maximize their income from their craft. You will complete 2 songs during the 8 week cycle, which will be performed in week 9 at an intimate showcase event.

The course is divided into three segments

1. The first component deals with the creative process: fishing for ideas, methods for improved lyric writing, lyric analysis, interesting choices for harmony, some basic music theory, constructing expressive melodies, interesting choices for rhyme, adhering to radio format, as well as a bit of “songwriters psychology”: how to deal with criticism, fame, avoid perfectionism and finding your “true north.”

2. The second component covers the music business aspect: registering your material, understanding royalties, distribution methods, writing a marketing plan, music publishing (e.g. how to get playlisted on radio), avenues for marketing on the internet, how to stay afloat financially as a musician, how to plan a tour, how to write an effective press release, effective music adminstration.

3. The third component incorporates the practical application of these, in the form of presentations: attendees get a chance to showcase their work, opening it to constructive criticism through a safe, nurturing platform. You will aim to write and polish two songs during the course, which you’ll present in an intimate gala event in week 8. You will get basic guidance on presentation: effective communication with your audience and your sound engineer, appearance on stage as well as preparation for stage.

Course Title 2 The Songwriters Toolkit - Pretoria Classification Performing Arts & Music -> Music -> Song Writing Course Requirements ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have a basic knowledge of grammar (e.g. the ability to identify verbs, nouns, adverbs etc.), and preferably have basic skills on guitar or piano/keyboard. Non-instrumentalists, who would like to write lyrics only, need to team up with an instrumentalist, which he/she can source either from within the course, or from outside. You will write two songs during the course, which need to be executed either as 1. a live performance by yourself or someone else, or 2. a recording of yourself or someone else.
