Born to Sing

Like the guitar, the piano or the violin, the voice is an instrument. Unfortunately, we can’t go into a shop and buy it ready-made over the counter. We need to assemble it ourselves, step-by-step. Over 8 weeks you will get to know your voice inside-out, and perform one song in front of an audience at an intimate gala event in week 9.

During the course, you will build your instrument in the following way:

- Releasing tension, wherever it may be hiding in your body. This will free up your voice, and help avoid injuries. A stiff jaw doesn’t only look unacttractive, it will also harm your voice in the long run. Relaxation exercises are based on the Alexander, Cicely Berry and Feldenkrais methods.
- Learning to support effectively, and using your breath economically.
- Getting to know your vocal anatomy. Yes, all those tiny organs with the funny names. You will learn how they work, and how to use them effectively.
- Getting to know your specific range and expanding it. Whether you’re a 5-octave Mariah Carey or a 2-octave Marianne Faithful, make it work for you.
- Improving your resonance, getting the richest tone possible.
- Acknowledging your body as your instrument, using it expressively.
- Expanding your repertoire
- Exploring different styles. Don’t get stuck in one area – live on the edge of your comfort zone.
- Working out your ears: hit those notes on the head.
- Improving your rhythmic timing: don’t be the lose screw in a tight band!
- Singing with others. Work on those harmonies – who knows, soon you’ll audition for Dream Girls II
- Studying mic technique: overcome your phobia of the microphone!
- Investigating vocal psychology: combat stage-fright and kill that little monster that tells you you can’t sing.

Course Title 2 Born to Sing course Durban Classification Performing Arts & Music -> Music -> Singing Course Requirements ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A vocal assessment is compulsory before joining the course. You will get a detailed breakdown of where youre at vocally, in order to give you the correct individualised guidance during the course. It includes a voice classification, a vocal and dynamic range assessment, a resonance and breath control assessment, as well as a pitch and rhythmic accuracy evaluation. If you comply with the entry requirements, registration is on a first come first serve basis. Your space is only secured once you make your payment of the full amount or a 50 % deposit. The course only accommodates 10 if its full youll go on our waiting list for our next course.
