Course Title:   Four-Day Landscape Design Programme

This course equips you with a clear mandate as to what design is all about and provide you with the basic principles of design so that you have an understanding of garden layout and structures together with how to combine plants together.

Course Objectives:

  • To teach the basis of good garden design, including surveying, working to scale and drawing.
  • o encourage participants to determine the style they really want and which will suit their lifestyles, or those of your clients.
  • To teach garden design principles and the use of architectural and informal shapes plus the importance of hard landscape structures;
  • To impart invaluable, time-saving tricks of the trade;
  • To explain how to prepare an outline scheme to formulate one’s ideas;  i.e. information gathering.
  • To showcase South African design trends;
  • To impart all this in an interactive manner accompanied by numerous colourful slides and a comprehensive plant list with live examples.
  • To provide practical information on how to relate design style to client, architecture and site.
  • Preparing an effective design based on an accurate survey and scale drawing.
  • Reinforcement of planting design principles and planting plan.
  • Presentational skills.

  • The importance of doing it right – scale / measuring / spatial analysis / surveying procedures
  • South African slide show
  • The process and elements of design i.e. making it work for the space
  • The Design Process
  • Where to start
  • Ideas & creative ability
  • Research procedures / tools and aids
  • Zoning the space
  • Bubble diagrams
  • The technique of drawing & the interpretation of space
  • Group drawing- basic elements & fundamentals
  • Group discussion and evaluation of drawing beginnings
  • Building of the basic outline plan
  • Occupation of space – hard elements to consider 
  • Landscaping
  • Water
  • Other hard surfaces
  • Garden additions and   elements
  • Additional skills
  • Suitability for client / discussions / problems to consider. 
  • Uniqueness of philosophy of design layout
  • Consideration given to:
    • Linkage with architectural features
    • Application of design shapes.  Consideration given to balanced layout.
    • How to draw curves, rectangular dissection of space
  • Start the Design – Design drawing and hand out of plans

  • Outline plans to be completed for homework
  • Hands on design direction i.e. direction on plan building
    1.1  Design ethos & concept agreed (client)
    1.2.  Measurement techniques & application to drawing.  Triangulation techniques
    1.3.  Conceptual drawings
    1.4.  Decision on style & plan direction
    1.5.  Working with scale
    1.6.  Assisting all students by design build up and practical sharing as design layouts begin to take form
  • Homework:- Start to  research planting combinations and choices

  • A broad overview of the principles of planting
  • How to prepare – design styles
  • Line drawing and drawing techniques
  • Practicals and tips for planting
  • South African Designs
  • Planting and combination grouping
  • Presentation of detailed plant list and student practicals
  • Continue with sketch scale drawing designs for presentation purposes.
  • Reinforcement of presentation skills
  • Presentation procedures 
  • Selling the concept
  • Graphics presentation
  • Client acceptance of scheme & booklets
  • Comment on all of the above by both lecturers as plans are progressing.
  • Start plan presentation

  • How does your style chosen start to relate to a specific design situations.
    • Analyzing client needs, personalizing & preferences
    • The design plan must relate to buildings & chosen  design for space
    • Measuring for banks and differing levels
