The purpose of this course is to provide a broad introduction to HIV/AIDS in the workplace and the effect it could have on the lives of individuals and their families. This disease affects all employees either directly or indirectly, and without knowledge about the disease its further spread cannot be prevented. Knowledge about the disease and its transmission is also critical to prevent discrimination against fellow employees who are HIV+

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session you should be able to:
Explain the terms HIV and AIDS;
List the different types of blood cells and provide basic information about the functions of each;
Outline the features of the HIV and give an indication of how this virus attacks the immune system;
Explain the effects of HIV infection and the ability of infected persons to perform work;
Name the implications of taking an HIV test and make a personal decision regarding taking such a test or not;
Outline the states of the disease and give an example of what happens with a sufferer at each stage, including the stages of full-blown AIDS and death;
Discuss the chances of a person surviving AIDS in the light of the latest news on medication and the cost of available drugs;
Give a basic outline of the effect of body fluids on the transmission of the HI virus;
List the ways in which HIV is transmitted and what the conditions are that are necessary for transmission;
List the ways in which mother to child transmission can occur, as well as explain the implications of each method of transmission;
Explain the dangers of drug abuse and behaviour that could result in HIV transmission, as well as list suggestions to limit transmission in these circumstances;
Explain what precautions are used in South Africa to ensure that blood products are HIV free;
Explain the relationship between human behaviour and HIV/AIDS;
List ways in which an individual can avoid contracting HIV/AIDS and explaining how each method reduces the risk of infection;
List examples of behaviours that carry a risk for the individual contracting HIV/AIDS and classify each behaviour as high, medium or low risk;
List situations in the workplace that have the potential of spreading the HI Virus and rate these in terms of high, medium and low risk;
List some common misunderstandings and fears about the transmission of HIV/AIDS in the workplace;
List the reasons why certain behaviours and activities carry a low risk of infection, such as sports, toilets, handshakes, work, food and utensils;
List the needs of AIDS orphans, and explain what burden this large number of orphans places on society and the economy;
Explain the effect of a population composed mainly of children and the aged has on the economy and the State;
Explain what medical care people with HIV/AIDS need and what implications this has for employers and the state;
Describe the effect of HIV/AIDS on the workforce and family income;
