Course Title:   In-House - 2-Day Kitchen Garden Course

This course is currently on offer only to in-house or group training. 

Course Objectives: 

  • Linkage of kitchen to food garden design so as to create a strong linkage to the preparation of food and home grown plants.
  • Becoming creative about the value of planning your own food gardens.   
  • Organics versus Biodiversity in the cooking sense and our understanding of being self sustaining.   
  • The kitchen influence in menu planning out of the garden for daily consumption and for new entertaining methods. 
  • Design your own planting display for presentation to the group.  
  • Cooking / equipment / knives – all necessary features to ensuring a successful planning exercise in complementing the desired kitchen garden theme.

Day 1
Day 2
Session 1 & 2    
  • The link between the garden and the Kitchen
    Slides.
    Different types of Food gardens and what can grow where.
  • Practical
    The different types of Herbs (mainly for culinary purposes and their taste).
  • The link between Organics and Bio-Diversity.
    Herb Garden Designs. Design your own (Layout only).
  • Slides.
  • Practical.
  • Container gardening for the kitchen window sill.
  • Practical.
Session 1 & 2 
  • Preserving the Harvest
  • The Garden influence in menu planning
  • The Kitchen influence - For entertaining – linkage of house to edible features / focal points in the garden. 
  • Practical – Go whacky in planting design for the kitchen display.
  • Practical – Design your own menu and relate the themes of the garden.
  • Equipment - what do you need to create this relationship.
  • The importance of balancing food and correct wine choices.

Session 3 & 4
  • Completion of herb garden - planting plan.
  • Seasonal planting for growing sustainable / edible plants.
  • Growing of Sprouts – done in class.
  • Practical.
  • Homework:  Continue herb layout plan
Session 3
  • Cooking of food.
  • Interactive Session. 
  • How to make Tussie Mussies. Make your own.
  • Final wrap up of the programme.
