Course Title: Principles of Information and Knowledge Management
Course Introduction
The ‘know-how’ contained within an organization – both recorded information and the intellectual and knowledge assets of its members – represents major, but often unrecognized, assets. What is their significance? How can they be used to assist in problem solving, achieve improved efficiency, promote greater productivity, new value, and increased competitiveness?
More people in business, industry, government, and other organisations work directly with information than with raw materials. Information is both a product and a component of the work of most of us – yet few people receive training about its use.
This course will introduce participants to the value of knowledge and information and show how corporate knowledge can be harnessed to benefit all concerned - both the organisation and its employees. It will provide an introduction to the field of Information and Knowledge Management (IKM); the topics that will be examined will range from the tools and techniques that can be used to identify knowledge needs and assets to the design and implementation of strategies to promote knowledge sharing and human interconnectivity. It will outline how organisations can best leverage their intellectual capital and how they can apply appropriate Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to assist in the effective identification, retrieval, exchange and dissemination of all forms of knowledge to support organisational objectives.
Although the emphasis in the course is on practical application of ideas and the identification of techniques that offer greater control over this valuable resource, the underlying theoretical underpinnings will form the basis for the discussions.

The course will consist of six full-days over a four week period.
Target audience

Course Venue
Public training is conducted at FTI House, in Kenilworth, Cape Town and at the FTI Training Centre in Sunninghill, Johannesburg. In addition, we rent temporary venues in other regions as we need them. Most in-house courses are held on company premises.
This course falls into a category loosely defined by SAQA as ‘vocational short courses’, because it requires less than a year’s full-time study, and is not intended to lead to a national qualification in terms of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Like many similar courses, it is therefore not been registered as a formal qualification in SAQA, it is widely recognized as a de facto qualification by industry throughout South Africa.
Academically and intellectually, the course assessment is done at senior undergraduate level, which would equate to level 5 on the NQF.
