Course Title:   Short course in Fashion Design

The Curriculum & Subject Choices

The distance learning Fashion Design short course does not offer a choice of subjects as all units are compulsory.

The course focuses on the learning inputs and outcomes on the introductory practices and principles entailed in successful commercial apparel design, with continual reference to production methods and market trends.

No prior ability in design or illustration is necessary. You will be taken through the steps from the very beginning of the fashion design process.

The distance learning Fashion Design short course curriculum includes the following:

Unit 1: This learning unit focuses on the recognition and identification of the design principles of silhouette and shape

Unit 2: This learning unit focuses on the transformation of flat two-dimensional forms into three-dimensional sculptured forms.

Unit 3: This learning unit focuses on fit & flare - two essential design ‘tools’ that transform three-dimensional sculptured forms into wearable clothing.

Unit 4: This learning unit introduces you to ‘the brief’- what is a design brief?; how the brief directs your research; how the brief defines the design parameters for a particular style of clothing.

Unit 5: This learning unit focuses on the principle of recognition that follows on from your research process to expand the key ideas derived from the brief.

Unit 6: This learning unit focuses on creative brainstorming as a method to analyse and cross-reference the consistency of the designs generated from the processes of briefing, recognition and research.

Unit 7: This learning unit consolidates the drawing skills that you will have developed across the first six units and includes presentation skills.

Unit 8: This learning unit focuses on the principle of realisation based on the skills acquired from the first seven units. You will follow a brief from start to finish to establish your skill level and to ‘rewind’ back to areas of focus (from units one to seven) that need reinforcement.

Unit 9: This learning unit focuses on story telling to allow you to create your own brief and your own signature in developing a complete fashion collection.

You will receive the distance learning short course in an electronic format. You can read the material on your personal computer as you work through it, or you can print out the material and work from hardcopy. You work through the material at your own pace … anytime, anywhere. This means that you decide how long it will take you to complete the short course. Electronic support is provided to you via the Internet. You are able to ask questions and submit work for evaluation via the Internet.

All equipment and consumables required are not included in the tuition fees payable by students to the institution.

There are no bursaries available to distance learning short course students.

LISOF has a deep appreciation of the rich multicultural diversity of South Africa and its impact on educational language policy. Notwithstanding this, the institution has selected a single language in terms of its language policy. The language of recruitment, admission, administration, facilitation, learning and assessment at the institution is English. All students admitted to the part-time Garment Construction (Sewing) short course must be proficient in written and spoken English at a minimum of a 16 year-old, second language level.

You will receive a Certificate of Completion upon delivery of the prescribed tasks (assessment events). Tasks (assessment events) must meet the minimum requirements according to the prescribed criteria and must be conducted according to LISOF’s general assessment policies.

Career Opportunities

The distance learning Fashion Design short course does not have the same breadth and depth of learning associated with the three-year fashion qualification so it does not offer immediate access to a career as a fashion designer.

After completion of the short course you will understand the ‘language’ of fashion and clothing. You will be able to:

  •  Produce contemporary, commercial apparel styles that represent a large portion of any fashion market
  • Design shirts, skirts, pants and many variations of these
  • Design clothes for yourself, your family and friends
  • Start up a micro-enterprise like a flea-market stall
  • Combine these skills with already existing skills to further your career options
