Course Title: Garment Construction (Sewing) short course
CURRICULUM & SUBJECT CHOICES
There are no choices to be made by the student for the part-time Garment Construction (Sewing) short course as all units are compulsory. The part-time Garment Construction (Sewing) short course is presented over 20 Saturday mornings. Dates and times are available on request.
The part-time Garment Construction (Sewing) short course curriculum includes the following:
Unit 1: Introduction - Students are coached to identify basic sewing equipment, and tto use it correctly and are introduced to fabric aspects including warp, weft, bias and selvage. Students are introduced to basic pattern information and methods of laying up fabric, marking fabric, pinning fabric and cutting fabric.
Unit 2: Machines & Sewing Operation & Straight Seam Stitching - Students are guided to correctly identify the domestic sewing machine’s components and are guided through a step-by-step operational methods for both the domestic sewing machines and the industrial overlockers. Students are coached through practical manoeuvring exercises; open and closed straight seams; edge stitching; foot stitching; twin stitching and overlocking finishes.
Unit 3: Faced Edges, Corners, Curves & Darts - Students are introduced to fusible interlining and the operations of the fusing press. Students are then coached through the following: straight-faced edges; faced inner and outer corners; faced outer corners; faced inner curves, faced outer curves; corner and curved panel seams; curved panel seams; single-ended darts;and double-ended darts.
Unit 4: Pressed Pleats & Yokes - Students are introduced to and guided in the coached to preparatione of a written orders-of-construction. In this unit, various skills around pleat constructions are introduced and developed, as well as effective ; how to read pleat direction arrows; how to press correctly; stay stitching techniques; and, machine finished hemming techniquess.
Unit 5: Denim A Skirt - Students are coached to read a pattern set and prepare a more complex order-of-construction. Students are guided in the recognition of pattern parts using known skills in order to assemble a more complex sample and are coached to apply fusible interlining to a waistband (method #1 of waistband attachment) as well as fold-on-fold machine stitched hem finishing, patch pocket template execution, finishing and attachment of the patch pocket to the garment.
Unit 6: Gathered Skirt - Students are coached to execute machine buttonholes and gathers using a number of gathering methods. Students are also coached in gathering stitch length and drawing up excess fabric; built on facings; stitching on buttons; hand felled hems; and method #2 of waistband attachment.
Unit 7: Pockets, Belt loops & Drawstrings - Students are coached in the following methods: safari pocket; bellow pocket; side-seam insert pocket; curved insert pocket with separate facings; angled insert pocket with decorative facings; belt loops; drawstrings and casings.
Unit 8: Collars & Front Finishes - Students are coached in techniques for the Mandarin collar without facings and the Bowling collar with neck facings.
Unit 9: Shirt Cuff & Bound Opening - Students are coached in bias cutting and binding methods as well as shirt cuff finishes and bound slit openings.
Unit 10: Bodice with Set-In Sleeve and Collar - Students are coached in the technique for setting in a sleeve and constructing a bodice including the princess panel line, darts, bowling collar, front and back facings, machine topstitched hem, and set-in sleeve with turn-up hem finish. Students are also trained to use the free arm of a domestic sewing machine.
Unit 11: Zip Openings - Students are coached to attach and use the correct zip feet on a domestic sewing machine and are trained to insert an invisible zip, a lapped zip and a centred zip.
All equipment and consumables required are not included in the tuition fees payable by students to the institution. Participating students need their own domestic sewing machine and will require basic sewing consumables (fabric, cottons, scissors, straight pins etc.).
There are no bursaries available to part-time short course students.
LISOF has a deep appreciation of the rich multicultural diversity of South Africa and its impact on educational language policy. Notwithstanding this, the institution has selected a single language in terms of its language policy. The language of recruitment, admission, administration, facilitation, learning and assessment at the institution is English. All students admitted to the part-time Garment Construction (Sewing) short course must be proficient in written and spoken English at a minimum of a 16 year-old, second language level.
You will receive a Certificate of Completion upon delivery of the prescribed tasks (assessment events). Tasks (assessment events) must meet the minimum requirements according to the prescribed criteria and must be conducted according to LISOF’s general assessment policies.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The part-time Garment Construction (Sewing) short course does not provide access to a career as a garment construction technician or machinist which requires three years of full-time study associated with the normal undergraduate fashion qualification.
What you will be able to do after the successful completion of the Garment Construction short course is:
Construct basic fashion apparel items that represent a large portion of apparel made and sold today
Understand the basic practices that underscore all garment construction (sewing) activity
And after completing this course, the most talented will be able to continue developing their garment construction knowledge and skills on their own.
