Course Title: Principles of Professional Business Analysis
Introduction Software applications that provide high-quality, innovative solutions to business problems are based on a strong partnership between users, management and IT. This synergy can only be achieved through the use of a common language to define both problems and solutions. This course empowers the business analyst by teaching the tools and techniques required to improve systems understanding, user commitment and improved systems quality.
Skilled and experienced business analysts and systems analysts play a vital role in developing accurate specifications for technology-based business solutions. Multi-skilled individuals who can play a successful role in translating business needs into IT-related specifications are rare. Such individuals need strong skills in developing business requirements for new IT-driven business solutions. The typical skill set required by the modern business systems analyst include.
business analysis methodology, tools and techniques
interpersonal communication skills
business knowledge
technologies & technology trends
This course does not cover all these topics, but focuses on the first of them. It provides a solid and comprehensive overview of the role of the business analyst and the business analysis process, and teaches the tools and techniques that are appropriate to the work of the Business Analyst.
The course develops awareness and understanding, but not mastery of all the topics. It is recommended that delegates who require mastery of the various topics elect to attend the much more comprehensive Diploma in Business Analysis. Delegates will, however, consolidate their practical skills by participating in a case study that runs through the course.
Target Audience The target audience includes IT and business people who need to understand the business analysis and requirements definition processes, or who are responsible for documenting user requirements, producing business cases, and producing requirements specifications, especially in fairly small applications or projects.
Typical delegates include project managers, entry level business or systems analysts, analyst programmers, contractors, IT and management consultants, users and project sponsors.
Course Delivery This course combines instructor-led seminars and group work built around a comprehensive case study, enabling participants to practice the tools and techniques covered. Group work stimulates participation and discussion. Throughout the course, delegates are encouraged to share their own personal experiences and concerns.
Practical exercises, both theoretical and”real life”, which will ensure that the knowledge gained is both transferred and instilled
Numerous ready-to-use templates, both hard- and soft copy (using standard Microsoft applications) help to transfer the knowledge to the workplace
Course Objectives At the end of this course, delegates should be able to:
describe a variety of software processes, and be familiar with those used in the organisation
be familiar with important information gathering techniques
describe the role of various IT stakeholders, including the Business Analyst, in the organisation
perform a problem analysis, identify and define the goal, objectives and scope of a project
identify functional, informational and non-functional requirements
select and utilise various business process improvement options
understand systems feasibility, and be able to conduct a feasibility study
develop a business case, including cost benefit analysis, impact and risk analysis
use modern information and process modelling techniques
understand the need for project and quality management in IS
appreciate and incorporate change management techniques into the systems plan
Course Workload The course workload is covered entirely during the full day sessions. There is no homework or reading required.
Course Assessment Students will learn by experience and assessment of others. To complete the course, delegates are required to
Attend the full course
Actively participate in the exercises, discussion & feedback
