Home Affairs to speed up student visa applications

The Department of Home Affairs intends to speed up student visa applications for the 2012 academic year in order to make life a little less complicated for foreign academics and students.

As per the department’s commitment to efforts to recruit “critically skilled” foreigners, it is going to lend a hand to foreign academics and students who need to have work and study visas, Home Affairs Director-General Mkuseli Apleni explained .

The department has put in place a variety of measures via the Work and Study Visa Project to speed up visa applications for the current academic year.

These include:

* The establishment of a specialized adjudication hub to concentrate exclusively on work and study visas for educational institutions.
* Separation of all outstanding study visa applications from 2012 applications in an effort to eliminate a backlog. All 2012 study visas are going to be adjudicated daily and outstanding applications will get special attention.
* The activation of Home Affairs provincial and regional offices that will help academics and students to apply for work and study visa applications.
* Linkages with educational institutions in order to provide verification of supporting documents accompanying work and study visas.

The department advised all educational institutions to complete all work and study visas no later than 15 March.

With respect to the Zimbabwe Documentation Project, Apleni explained that the department expected to have the process completed by the end of the current financial year.

The department received 275 762 applications from Zimbabweans attempting to regularise their stay in South Africa.

“To date and having undertaken various measures to communicate with all the applicants, both in terms of the submission of outstanding documents as well as the collection of permits, we are pleased to say we have issued 255 282 permits. “We are therefore left with 20 480 outstanding permits. We reiterate our commitment to ensuring that these are issued speedily so that this project can be brought to a close,” he was quoted saying.

Survey suggest that most pupils do not complete high school

Two out of every three pupils in Grade 10 do not go on to pass matric, a survey has found.

“Most pupils who drop out before completing high school do so as a result of a lack of funds,” SA Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) researcher Jonathan Snyman said.

“Other common reasons that pupils leave school are to look for work or because of family commitments. There is also a common view that being at school is not relevant to their lives,” he said.

The SAIRR survey found that fewer than half of those who enrolled in Grade 10 in 2008 sat for the 2010 matric exams.

Only 34 percent of all 2008 pupils went on to pass matric in 2010, and only a third of those passes were good enough to gain admission to university to study for a bachelor’s degree.

Those who did not complete high school along with those whose highest qualification was matric, accounted for 81 percent of all unemployed in the country, the survey found.

Only six percent of the unemployed were people who had completed a tertiary education.

Mr Snyman added the fact that ‘the most significant concern is that students who drop out of school more often than not never go back to complete their education. As much as one third of all 15-24 year-olds typically are not in employment, education, or training’.

The survey was based on data released by the department of basic education and will be officially released next week.

Bloomberg unveiled Interbrand’s Best Global Brands of 2011 report. The rankings are derived from five criteria and don’t include privately owned brands. The current recession has provided marketing executives throughout the world with the most challenging test of their careers. A number of brands have excelled amid the difficult times-or at the very least held their own. While others have fallen an unexpected number of spots in the latest report compiled by consultancy Interbrand. However, for seven brands, remarkable performances saw them race up the charts to take their place on this year’s list.

The majority of the top 10 have retained their positions from last year. Coca-Cola retains the #1 spot, followed by IBM, Microsoft, Google, and GE. Despite the fact that there aren’t a great deal of differences on this year’s list, you will discover a couple of unexpected surprises. Nissan, John Deere, and HTC are new on this year’s list, ranking at 90, 97, and 98, respectively.

Out of all the brands listed, Apple experienced the most significant growth and second biggest jump in the rankings. In a year when the majority of brands moved no more than a few spots in either direction, Apple leaped amazingly nine places becoming the eighth most valuable brand globally. With an amazing 58% improvement in brand value, Apple leaped from 17th place last year to break into this year’s top 10.

Amazon too experienced incredible growth, jumping 10 spots to come in at No.26 on the list, having a year-over-year value increase of 32%. Microsoft and Google finished in third and fourth respectively, with Microsoft slipping 3% and Google increasing 27% as compared to 2010.
